With each new generation, the Ford Ranger has gone from strength to strength, and the latest iteration has beaten two other heavyweights in the pick-up sector to win a prestigious award. This month, the vehicle was named Pick-up of the Year 2019 by motoring magazine, Auto Express.

With its upgraded powertrain and new technology, the Ranger pipped both the Mitsubishi L200 and Nissan Navara to the post for the award, with judges praising its stronger, more efficient engine and refined, comfortable interior.

Key to the Ford Ranger’s latest upgrade was the introduction of a 2.0-litre EcoBlue diesel engine, which is available with either 168bhp or 210bhp. There’s up to 500Nm of torque on offer too, meaning the pick-up can deliver ample pulling power even when fully laden. Customers can choose between a six-speed manual and a brand new 10-speed automatic gearbox, which helps to optimise the engine’s efficiency.

There’s plenty going on inside too, with the Double Cab variant in particular boasting a premium feel. The level of space on offer helped to put the model ahead of its rivals, as did the option to add FordPass Connect to the tech suite. This clever technology turns the vehicle into a WiFi hotspot for up to 10 devices and feeds live traffic information to the satellite navigation system, among other things.
