The new Ford Puma – in many ways it’s the same as before, mainly because Ford got so many things right the first time around. For instance, its appealing coupé-like profile is very much present and correct. However, look closely and you’ll soon spot the upgrades…
This latest Puma is packed with new features. These include 5G FordPass Connect (replacing the outgoing 4G version), SYNC 4 (replacing SYNC 3), and a 12-inch touchscreen (which is four inches bigger than the previous screen). Also, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay takes the place of the wired iteration which has been retired with the last generation Puma model.
Ford’s smallest SUV has been treated to an exterior refresh and an entirely revamped interior. It features newly designed headlights and daytime running lights, the latter of which emit a distinctive light signature. A new, optional alloy wheel design is available too, allowing you to customise the Puma if you wish.
For the first time, the car is available with Dynamic Matrix LED headlights which incorporate two technologies. Firstly, they use Predictive Dynamic Bending Light to detect any curves and intersections ahead while adjusting intensity and direction accordingly. Secondly, they deliver anti-flare, high-beam illumination which automatically switches to dipped beam whenever a vehicle approaches, and switches back again when it passes.
It’s on the inside where you’ll notice the biggest evolution. The dash is considerably less cluttered, relying on fewer switches and buttons in favour of enhanced touchscreen (and voice) control. Accordingly, the central display is bigger than ever and it's customisable too, allowing you to prioritise the content that matters most to you.
Another new feature is ambient lighting that enables you to establish one of a range of colour combinations to perfectly reflect your mood. The car is fitted with an acoustic laminated windscreen too, which minimises extraneous sounds, such as wind noise. Furthermore, an optional panoramic glass roof is available.
Seats are now upholstered in synthetic leather (as are armrests and the steering wheel), with each trim level featuring its own distinct stitching. The car also features a new flat-bottomed, two-spoke steering wheel and includes a sliding armrest that affords enhanced comfort.
Hybrid technology is included across the board, facilitating a winning blend of performance and efficiency. For instance, a standard-issue 1.0-litre 125bhp EcoBoost petrol engine returns up to 44.4mpg and produces CO2 emissions from 119g/km. It also enables the Puma to go from 0-62mph in less than 10 seconds. This self-charging powertrain is paired with a six-speed manual gearbox (seven-speed Powershift automatic transmission is available as an option).
Want faster acceleration? A 167.7bhp powertrain allows the vehicle to speed from zero to 62mph in just 7.4 seconds.
Regardless of the model and/or trim level you choose, the new Ford Puma is equipped with a Euro 6d petrol engine. This means that the car is exempt from Clean Air Zone charges operated in Bradford, Sheffield, Tyneside, Birmingham, London and other major conurbations, including Greater Manchester, which is currently under review.
Ford’s SYNC 4 system replaces the outgoing infotainment set-up, offering twice as much processing power, making it easier and quicker to access its many features. These include voice recognition, wireless Android and Apple smartphone integration, and wireless charging for your compatible devices. Enjoy your favourite music and speech-based content via a standard-issued sound bar or an optional 10-speaker Bang & Olufsen audio system.
This family-friendly vehicle is equipped with leading-edge safety tech too, such as Intelligent Adaptive Cruise Control (IACC) which allows you to establish a pre-determined speed. IACC incorporates Stop & Go, which maintains a pre-defined distance between the Puma and the vehicle ahead. This means that the Puma will come to a stop if the vehicle in front does the same. IACC also includes Lane Centring which ensures the car remains in the correct lane position.
